Horses Sense of Smell

Like all animals, horses have all their senses highly developed, to a level that humans could not comprehend.

A stallion is able to smell a mare in heat at a distance of approximately one kilometer. Like dogs, horses are introduced through smell, they smell each other, getting to know each other from that moment on.

Their life is shaped in such a way that smell is essential. Urine and droppings are real estaments for other horses, in the sense of sexuality and territoriality.

In ancient times they were used to know if water or food was poisonous. Related to other senses, when they smell something, they also look at it and taste it, remembering these sensations even for years.
