Horse Care in Winter

horse care in winter

During the coldest months of the year, it’s crucial to provide horses with the proper care to ensure their well-being. To achieve this, certain essential guidelines should be followed.

Hydration and Feeding:

During winter, it’s essential to ensure that horses have access to clean, tepid water, between 7 and 18 degrees Celsius, to encourage consumption. Additionally, increasing the amount of forage in their diet provides an additional source of energy to maintain optimal body temperature.

Shelter and Protection:

Providing horses with adequate shelter is essential to protect them from wind, rain, and low temperatures. A covered stable provides a secure environment where they can take refuge from the harsh weather conditions. Additionally, keeping their extremities and hooves protected and lubricated helps prevent possible injuries.

 Additional Care:

During winter, regular deworming should be carried out, ensuring that the water in the trough does not freeze, and periodically checking the animal’s health. Furthermore, nutritional supplements and specific products can be used to maintain skin and coat health, as well as to prevent respiratory and skin diseases.

By following these precautions and providing a suitable environment, the well-being of horses can be ensured during the coldest months of the year.
